I have a penchant for collecting small clippings of prose and poetry; am partial to sitting in bed with a good book; love Florence + The Machine, and look dangerously sexy in a pair of red fuck-me pumps.
I completely agree! She has a real gift for songwriting and she’s great on the violin, too, but I find her voice unappealing. I know people say that she’s “different” and I have nothing against that. A lot of the singers I like — Jeffrey Lewis, Bob Dylan, Nick Drake etc — don’t have classically “good” voices but they give their songs real power and meaning nonetheless. Part of my problem with Joanna Newsom’s voice is that it always sounds the same and doesn’t add much to her songs. If anything, it’s difficult to hear the lyrics which, I agree, are very good. Maybe try Devendra Banhart, Fionn Regan or Alela Diane - their lyrics are not dissimilar in style to Joanna Newsom’s but their voices are slightly less of an aquired taste!
